SUMMER SQUASH

Zucchinis should come with a warning: don’t plant too many! That’s because they are highly productive.

One or two plants provide a bounty; three or four may leave you slightly overwhelmed. But, unless you have a large family, more than four plants can be a zucchini emergency: what do you do with all that fruit?

Zucchinis are related to pumpkin and squash and have large green and mottled leaves with prickly stems. The typical zucchini produces a narrow, dark-green and slightly ridged fruit.

Seedling growers often offer a mix of varieties (see box over page) allowing you to experiment with different colours and shapes.
