Fix the basics first, then let’s get to the future

Tech companies love to look to the future rather than deal with the here and now. Open AI warns shrilly about the existential risks of artificial general intelligence while ignoring the current harms caused by less capable AI. Google develops driverless cars and other moonshots while spam still filters through, and search gets less and less helpful in finding unsponsored information. And Facebook-owner Meta heralds the beginning of the metaverse, yet can’t stop basic malware from spreading across the site.

I know this because I’ve watched it happen.
