Nina Metz: What happened to sports shows — scripted stories or sports journalism — for the casual viewer?

Earlier this month, HBO announced its long-running newsmagazine “Real Sports” would be ending after the current season. Also canceled this month: HBO’s “Winning Time,” the scripted series about the L.A. Lakers transformation in the 1980s under P.T. Barnum-esque ownership of Jerry Buss.

When it comes to sports, HBO is pivoting away from long-form journalism and scripted efforts and instead adding a sports tier to its streaming platform. For an extra $9.99 a month, subscribers to Max will get access to pro basketball, baseball and hockey games, plus the NCAA March Madness tournament.
