HOW IT WORKS
El Niño means "little boy" in Spanish. It refers to the warming of sea currents along the South American coast. Sea temperatures have a massive impact on weather conditions – when the ocean is warm, more clouds form, leading to increased rainfall.
During an El Niño period, the seawater along the west coast of South America becomes warmer, while the seawater along the east coast of Australia becomes colder.
