Q I live on the coast and have started to photograph our local seals. Where they lie on the mud at low tide, the light is often slightly behind them and harsh. Any tips on how best to photograph them?

The harshness of the light will vary depending on cloud cover so if that’s your main concern, try going out on a day when there is cloud cover acting as a giant softbox so the contrast range isn’t so difficult to expose for. That said, the kind of textured and characterful features of seals means that you can still get some great shots, even on a high-contrast day you describe.
