FIELD NOTES Samara Karoo Reserve
It's a bit of a drive to Samara Karoo Reserve: it's 53 km from Graaff-Reinet, but you have to get to Graaff-Reinet first, or 270 km from the closest airport, at Gqeberha. But this is a good thing. It gives you time to chuck all your stress and city work-a-day blues out the window. You're not going to need them where you're going.
What you will need is a sense of wonder and discovery. And a decent pair of walking shoes–for you will be doing some walking across the plains, searching for Samara's famed cheetahs.
What you will get in return is peace, serenity and a renewed hope in humanity. And some terrific stories to tell.
AT THE BEGINNING
Samara is just over 27 ha of born-again wilderness spread across the mythical Plains of the Camdeboo. It's fondly referred to as the Samara Mara.
