“You’re going where?”
The curiosity in the question was amplified by a note of surprise and concern. As the years go by, one’s adult children develop increasing levels of caring when their ageing parents set off on yet another photographic adventure into the bush. They were accustomed to the thought of Etosha, the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, the Maasai Mara, the Kgalagadi, Chobe, the Sabi Sands and a host of smaller parks. But I was now 81 and Samara had never appeared on our bucket list, or even on their own radars.
“It’s in the Karoo,” I explained. “About a two-hour drive from Port Elizabeth. Some
