NEW TIMES IN AN OLD TOWN

There ere loads of interesting things happening in the Winelands university town, from new bars to new hotels to refurbishments.

It all started with Simon van der Stel, the first governor of the Cape Colony. In 1687, he commissioned the planting of some 12 000 European oak trees in and around Stellenbosch, giving the growing village its nickname.

There's been a lot of water under the bridge since then, with the freshest springing from various sources.

First there was Nocturne (nocturneexperience.co.za) by the Dusk duo of Darren Badenhorst and Callan Austin. It's a dark, moody restaurant and mixology bar experience. That's right, experience. One does not simply walk into Nocturne for a quick drink.

One sets aside a good few hours for the extraordinary (outlandish?)
