Two thousand and seventeen was the year I finally said, screw it, I'm doing it, and took a trip I'd been contemplating for over 10 years. I made this ballsy decision on an ordinary Tuesday evening while getting ready to leave work. My cell phone pinged with a message from a friend teaching English in South Korea. I was instantly intrigued.

Realising my window for carefree adventure would soon close – I was on the verge of marriage – my plan formed and unfolded: TEFL course, check. All documents, check. Teaching job in Vietnam, check. Resign from current job, check. Flight booked, check. Long-term-boyfriend-slash-almost-fiancé sulking and giving me the silent treatment, check.
