The Massey Ferguson 6490 was the company’s new row crop tractor at the beginning of the Millennium and Philip Powell, from Welshpool, owns a pair of them.
The town of Welshpool, in Powys, is on the Celtic side of the England/Wales border, and its economy is based on farming. Smithfield Market is the largest one-day sheep market in Europe, and the town is also the headquarters of the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust.
Philip runs a firm of agricultural engineers, and has been in business for more than 30 years. As I entered his yard I could tell at once that he has a passion for Massey Ferguson. I was surrounded by tractors in the familiar livery, including a couple of old stalwarts.
“I come from a farming background, and have lived in the area all my life,” he explained. “We currently farm 120 acres, and grow mainly cereals. We tend to do most of the work during the summer months, with the winter being given over to tractor repairs.”
