From rags to rich men

Today the word Chanel conjures up sugary tweeds and perfume. In fact, Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel was the 20th century's most influential designer. During a 60-year career, her designs shaped generations, from the 1926 little black dress to the famed suit of the Fifties. She died in the Ritz in 1971, aged 87, after working all day.

And now a new V&A show is paying tribute to her genius.

Chanel used rich and aristocratic men as a climbing frame to bankroll and promote her.
