Type 2s come in a range of shapes and forms, with a whole raft of models created over the years for specific purposes, from ambulances and fire trucks to cherry pickers and sightseeing Buses. Those built for the emergency services, in particular, are always popular and guaranteed to attract a crowd at Volkswagen events, thanks in part to their specific equipment, from stretchers to fire pumps – based on air-cooled flat fours, naturally.

Young kids are especially fond of fire engines, a fact that inspired the owner of the Kiddieland amusement park in the 1950s to transform two Volkswagen Single Cab pickups into people movers disguised as fire trucks.
