At first glance you’d think that Alex Wakefield’s MG ZS 180 A has been the subject of a chequebook restoration, such is the condition of the Trophy Yellow hatchback. The reality is that it’s in pretty much original condition, improved only slightly from when he found it for sale on Facebook Marketplace last year.
He wasn’t even actively looking for a new set of wheels, just idly browsing the small ads like your average hardcore car enthusiast does in a spare moment, when he or she should probably be washing up, tidying or vacuuming the living room.
“The idea of a compact hatchback with a six-cylinder motor drew me toward these cars when new,” said Alex. “I nearly bought one in this colour and body style back in 2001, when they first came out, but made the very sensible decision to go to university instead. So, it was a more than 20-year itch that needed scratching.”
Alex bought his 2003 ZS 180 in July 2022, just as it turned 19 years old.
