In the summer of 2021, Paris Saint-Germain sent a remarkable statement of intent in the transfer market. They poached Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos, the outgoing captains of Barcelona and Real Madrid, signed Italy’s European Championship-winning goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from Milan, and Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum – all free agents.

Fast-forward two years: Messi and Ramos have both departed the club at the end of their contracts having failed to find their best form, while Wijnaldum is also set to leave permanently following ayear on loan at Roma. Mauricio Pochettino and his successor Christophe Galtier have also both moved on in that timeframe, as the club once more seek a new direction. Both managers secured the Ligue1 title, but both did so in underwhelming circumstances, amid the backdrop of domestic cup failures and tame Champions League exits at the last-16 stage.
