The 1991-’92 convertibles are among the Firebirds that frequently get forgotten. After only eight Trans Am convertibles were built in 1969, there were no more Pontiac-sanctioned and -invoiced Trans Am convertibles until 1991. Dealers could have a coupe converted beginning in 1987 when Camaros got a convertible model, but Pontiac as a company did not get back in the convertible game until 1991.
Pontiac was working off the goodwill and leftover Camaro capacity that the converting company ASC could provide. Because of that, these cars were built in limited numbers — just 550 to 650 approximately each model year, with the five-speed manuals being particularly rare. A little over 100 five-speed cars were built in each year of 1991 and 1992.
As such, these are among the lowest production Trans Ams of the series. Not as low as third-gen Firehawks or 1LE cars, but there weren’t even enough for every Pontiac dealer to get one. They were allocated to dealers by the zone offices based on sales volume. Dealers could not order the cars.
