Gen3-1

I’ve just finished reading Issue 136 of AMC, and as a reader and collector since Issue 1, I found it thoroughly enjoyable. However, I spotted a couple of topics worthy of a comment.

In Paul Newby’s excellent column, he discusses the evolution of Supercars, and raises the subject of future market relevance. I understand his sentiment, but it needs to be placed into perspective. Market relevance has a minor place within the current Supercars environment, but it should not become the determining factor for its future development. It thrived when the Falcon continued racing years after production ended, and achieved the same in the wake of Holden’s demise. It will undoubtedly achieve the feat once the current Camaro is placed out to pasture in early 2024. The category must be wary of blindly pursuing market relevance, because doing so could lead to its demise.

While some manufacturers perceive a benefit from market relevance, many spectators do not. They aren’t significantly worried about whether the cars they cheer for at the track are the same as those in the showroom. They focus on the badge, and the entertainment provided by the racing. Whether the car hasimportant than whether it looks good, sounds good, and provides an entertaining spectacle.
