Overworked cops struggle to cope

EMPLOY more and train better, advised crime analyst Mary de Haas. She was commenting on Police Minister Bheki Cele’s recent announcement that there was a significant shortage of detectives in the country.

Cele said the SAPS faced a severe shortage with some provinces experiencing a deficit as high as 32%. KwaZulu-Natal has a 23.31% shortage, while the North West, at 32.89%, has the highest.

De Haas expressed concern about the potential impact of the shortage on crime and investigations.

“The shortage of detectives is a pressing issue, as they are overburdened with excessive case loads. The government needs to urgently increase the number of detectives and ensure they receive proper training,”
