How to write a historical novel AND STAY SANE

Writing historical fiction is pretty much the same as writing any kind of fiction: you need a gripping story, relatable characters, and an authentic setting. But only in historical fiction (and perhaps Star Wars FanFiction) can the world you build be fact-checked. That means your dates must be right. Your politics must be right. Your lay of the land must be right. You absolutely cannot skimp on immoveable facts.
