50 YEARS, 50 WAGONS: GREAT CENTRAL’S ANNIVERSARY

It was access (almost) all areas at the UK’s only double-track main line heritage railway over the weekend of June 17/18 when the Great Central Railway did what it does best – taking many of its toys out of the box to celebrate its 50th anniversary in style.

Utilising its home fleet of both steam and diesel locomotives – which since 1973 has grown from industrials to an impressive and sizeable collection of BR locomotives, the double-track main line set-up can allow for at least four departures an hour from the main operating hub at Loughborough Central and has become a staple of the railway’s gala timetables.
