Birds of a feather

IF YOU’VE visited a UK yarn show in recent years, the chances are your eyes were drawn to the beautiful colourways on the Birdstreet Yarn stand. The brand is run by husband and wife team Jon and Clare Bird, and their stunning, artistic yarns are a credit to their combined creative talents. We spoke with Jon about how the duo came to set up their artisan business, how they have worked to grow the brand, and to find out more about their yarn ‘gatherings’, called Flock South West Yarnies.

Can you tell us a little bit about the story behind Birdstreet Yarn?

“For us, it all started with Clare. Clare has enjoyed knitting, crocheting, textiles and spinning for a long time. In 2016, she began selling her handmade project bags for knitting and crocheting. In 2017, she tried dyeing yarn. At the time I worked as a headteacher of a large primary school, and the job took most of my energies (and time).
