FOLLOWING THE LOUISIANA PURCHASE of 1803, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned an overland journey to the Pacific Coast with Captain Meriwether Lewis leading the expedition and Captain William Clark sharing the command. About four dozen souls embarked on this 8,000-mile trek to explore the newly purchased lands west of the Mississippi River.
