HELMERINGHAUSEN & TIRASBERG

1 Namtib Biosphere Reserve

This reserve is next to the D707, which is billed as the most scenic road in Namibia. The campsite – Little Hunter’s Rest – is 3km from the main lodge. You have a view of the Tirasberg and the red dunes of the Namib Desert to the west. Camping R250 p.p. (braai, solar-heated showers, communal wind shelter, no power). Lodge rooms from R1 400 p.p. sharing B&B. Guests must book in advance. You can hike a variety of trails or climb one of the koppies (free).

2 Ranch Koiimasis

Only accessible from the D707. Activities range from hiking to guided horse rides. Camping R250p.p. (five private stands, each with a braai and clean drinking water; shared ablutions). Chalet Virosa has two single beds and shares the campsite ablution block. It has its own outside braai area but no kitchen: R700 p.n, minimum stay two nights. Schwalbennest is a private self-catering chalet that sleeps two: R1500 p.n, minimum two nights. Luxury rooms at Fest Inn Fels Farm Lodge R2145 p.p. B&B.

3 Kanaan N/a’an ku sê Desert Retreat

This is a destination tailor-made for landscape photographers. Camping (eight stands with private bathrooms) from R225 p.p. Luxury en suite safari tent from R3950 p.p. sharing DB&B (SADC special).

4 Aubures Camp

About 55km north-west of Helmeringhausen, on the C27. They have guided rock art excursions, walking trails and MTB routes that start at the campsite. There are six stands under camel thorn trees (no electricity, but hot water for showers). Camping R330 p.n. for two guests.

5 Landsberg Campsites

Four large campsites (each accommodates 10 people) with private ablutions, shade, patio and braai: R245 p.p. SADC rate. Each campsite has a view over the plains in the foothills of the Tirasberg; campsite #3 also looks out over a waterhole. The sites are far apart from each other, so you won’t accidentally catch your neighbour in his pyjamas and stokies.
