Prepare rootballs for planting

Just before planting out or repotting plants, check their roots. If they have started to circle in the old pot, tease them out, tugging them from the bottom and opening up the structure of the rootball – this will stop the roots from continuing to grow around in a circular fashion in the new pot or in the soil.

If the roots are matted and pot-bound they can be cut back byimprove establishment. Water well to help them recover.
