IT’S OFFICIAL – CRANBERRY JUICE CAN PROTECT AGAINST UTIS

t’s long been the subject of debate or even labelled a complete myth, but the results of a Flinders University study have settled the argument once and for all – cranberry juice and cranberry supplements reduce the risk of repeat urinary tract infections (UTIs) by more than a quarter for women and by more than half in children. Drinking or taking cranberry juice or supplements can also lower UTI risk in people susceptible to infection following medical interventions, by about 53%. “Most UTIs are effectively and pretty quickly treated with antibiotics, sometimes as little as one dose can cure the problem,” says Flinders University epidemiologist Dr Jacqueline Stephens, a co-author of the study. “Unfortunately in some people UTIs keep coming back.” It’s important to note that living with diabetes not only increases the risk of experiencing UTIs, when they do
