CAST-ON METHODS FOR TOE-UP SOCKS

MANY SOCK patterns are knitted from the cuff downwards, but some designers and knitters prefer to work from the toe up – and in this case, a special ‘closed’ cast-on technique is required which will give you a smooth and comfortable fabric at the tip of the toe.

There are a range of methods to try, and we’ll be exploring three here: the hugely popular Judy’s Magic Cast On, developed by Judy Becker; the Turkish cast-on technique; and Aggie’s Simple Cast On for toe-up socks.

Personally, I prefer the results I get from using Judy’s Magic Cast On (although I always seem to forget how to do it if I haven’t used it for some time!). Aggie’s method is, as described, simple and easy to
