FREE-MOTION QUILTING

BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO: FREE MOTION QUILTING

Free-motion quilting (FMQ) is a type of quilting where you guide the fabric under the presser foot of your sewing machine in all directions. To achieve this, the feed dogs are lowered and a special free-motion (or darning) foot is attached. Lots of different, unique designs can be achieved, from an all-over design to some detailed quilting in small areas.

HOW TO FREE-MOTION QUILT

MEANDERING

One of the easiest stitches to start your free-motion quilting journey with is the meander stitch. This is a long winding line that creates curves across the whole quilt. The stitch is a great one for beginners as it can be easily scaled up or down and there are no repeating shapes to make.
