THE HEROIC TRIO (1993)

n the ’90s, Hong Kong cinema spearheaded the girls-with-guns, wire-fu action craze in the vein of . Director Johnnie To brings together three of Hong Kong’s leading starlets – Anita Mui, Maggie Cheung and Michelle Yeoh – so they can kick some serious arse and take down a baby-kidnapping villain (the appropriately named Evil Master, who is turning the babies into demon cannibals!). Like the best superhero flick, all the characters here are maximised for awesomeness: Mui plays Wonder Woman, an ordinary housewife who is secretly a pro at swordplay and shuriken-throwing, while Cheung is Thief Catcher, a wisecracking biker girl with a fondness for leather and is a must-watch for fans of campy action, killer outfits and actresses clearly having a blast.
