Mid Ride

Starting from the Myriad Hotel in Lisbon – which is very modern and surrounded by similarly modern buildings, and hides the fact that Lisbon is the second oldest capital city in Europe – we headed out eastwards over the 17km long Vasco de Gama bridge over the mouth of the Tagus river. This is all dual carriageway, the best way to get out of and away from the city, and soon turned on to a broad single carriageway through agricultural lands with spatterings of oak trees. Past a pair of military bases, one with an early aircraft that, to my uneducated eye, looked very similar to an English Electric Lightning, but it could be a Spanish copy I guess? Maybe from the Spanish Civil War era? It was something to ponder on as we swept through open countryside, with a lot of irrigation
