The Hunters, Taos by Oscar Berninghaus

AN IMPORTANT painting featuring a Taos hunter by Oscar Berninghaus (1874–1952) fetched just over $1.5 million at the recent Scottsdale Art Auction, setting a record for his work.

The oil-on-canvas study, , , depicts, the 1926 painting that won Berninghaus, who studied at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, the Altman Prize at the National Academy of Design. Both works also appear to use model Santiago Bernal, a frequent subject in the artist’s paintings.
