A fight in flight

We recently stopped at Sunset Dam near Lower Sabie in the Kruger Park to have our morning coffee. We noticed a giant kingfisher on the wall of the weir – it called out incessantly. A second kingfisher landed right next to the first one. They glared at each other for a long time, then suddenly grabbed each other by the throat.

This kicked off a big battle – they fought on the wall, in the air, back on the wall… they even threw each other into the water. After an ominous silence, only one bird emerged. We thought the other had drowned, but it flew away soon after. What an experience!
