More pump-out facilities needed

LETTER OF THE MONTH

As with most water users we like clean water to sail in and do our best to minimise discharge into the sea. We have a holding tank, and when in rivers, anchorages and harbours, we use the tank.

Sailing on the south coast, in one of the busiest sailing areas in the country, you would think emptying the holding tank would be easy. Over the Easter break we sailed west from Portsmouth.

There is one pump-out facility in Cowes that is offered at no charge or for the price of a short stay if you take your time over things. I believe there is a pump-out at Lymington but a significant charge is made for its use.
