Let's face it, as the passenger in a right-hand drive vehicle visiting a left-hand drive country, you're the one doing all the crucial stuff; waving the key card at a reluctant parking barrier sensor, dealing with the intricacies of toll booths and now (a new one for me) looking at stern-faced border guards upon leaving the Schengen zone. I'm sure I look guilty whenever I encounter officialdom!
We'd left Spain a few weeks earlier and were about to plunge into unfamiliar territory in our bid to remain on mainland Europe a little longer, but we kept reminding ourselves how quickly we'd adapted when we'd travelled to Spain for the first time in our 'van. In the end, my anxiety was unfounded. After only a few minutes, we had navigated both the Slovenian exit and Croatian entry booths and were on our way to new adventures…
With no fixed plan for Croatia, other than to explore some of its towns and cities and to fit in some walking, we decided to follow the coastline and venture inland as the fancy (and weather) took us.
We like to mix campsites with off-grid parking, but had read that overnighting outside official areas is prohibited, so intended to use campsites until we had the lie of the land. Unfortunately, in March and April, open campsites in Croatia seem to be limited. Luckily, we found one not too far from the border near Funtana and headed there for our first Adriatic sunset.
