Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, top rival to Trump, jumps into race for president

Ahead of an expected announcement on Twitter Space Wednesday evening, DeSantis took the official step of filing paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to run for president.

Ron DeSantis, the arch-conservative, culture-warrior Florida governor who ironically saw his political career take off by defending and channeling former President Donald Trump, appears to have decided to challenge him for the GOP presidential nomination.

Ahead of an expected announcement on Twitter Spaces Wednesday evening, DeSantis took the official step of filing paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to run for president.

The principal campaign committee, "Ron DeSantis For President" lists DeSantis as a candidate in the Republican Party seeking the office of president.

DeSantis will appear alongside Twitter Executive Chairman Elon Musk Wednesday in an event on the social media platform where he will formally announce his campaign for the Republican nomination in 2024.
