THE spekboom (Portulacaria afra) is a fast-growing succulent shrub or tree indigenous to South Africa. It can absorb up to 100 times more carbon dioxide (CO2) than a fir tree of the same size.
In their natural habitat, each hectare (about one soccer pitch) of spekboom can absorb between 2,9 and 8,6 tons of CO2 a year.
