HARDENING OFF

The process of acclimatising plants to withstand cooler conditions. Most often, the term is applied when seedlings need to make the transition from indoors to an outdoors home. Hardening off is achieved in several stages. It involves bringing the seedlings outside for a period of time each day (or using a cold frame), with each period getting longer until they have adjusted to being outdoors.

HARDINESS

The ability to withstand winter temperatures in a given area. Hardy plants include those that don’t need glasshouse protection in a cool climate.

HEIRLOOM

A historic plant variety. These are often only available in limited numbers from specialist outlets. Heirloom seed varieties are essential for maintaining genetic diversity for future breeding, but are usually overlooked in large-scale farming in favour of higher yielding
