A GARDENER’S ESSENTIAL A–Z

PART THREE

P(continued from Issue 6)

POT ON

To transplant a plant grown in a pot or seed tray into another pot, usually one or two sizes larger. This may take place several times until a plant is large enough to plant outdoors, or into a container, to reach maturity. Potting on should be done before the plant becomes rootbound (see ‘R’).

POTTING MEDIUM

Another term for material in which container and indoor plants are grown. It’s usually formulated to a recipe (such as a mix of compost and sand).

POTASH

A potassium-rich matter that encourages the production of flowers and fruit, and helps to ripen or toughen growth. It’s applied in liquid form in tomato fertiliser, and in granular form as sulphate of potash. The symbol for potassium on fertilisers is ‘K’.
