Miss SA rule change draws mixed reaction

Former beauty pageant winners have mixed views on Miss South Africa’s inclusion of married women in the competition.

The announcement was made last week.

Women who are married, married with children, engaged to be married, or divorced can now enter.

In addition, Miss South Africa will air a seven-part reality series called Crown Chasers, which will give the public insight into how the competition is run.

Dr Kajal Lutchminarian, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, won the Miss India South Africa and Miss India Worldwide competitions in 2009 and 2010, respectively.

Lutchminarian said: “I think it’s about time. We have to change the narrative of beauty and unrealistic beauty standards and expectations. Women should be celebrated and not objectified.
