Ratepayers revolt

ETHEKWINI is facing growing resistance from ratepayers who believe the 2023 increases for rates and utilities will be unaffordable for most. Furthermore, they have questioned the value they receive from local government.

The city, the only metro in KwaZulu-Natal, plans to increase property rates by 8.9%, electricity by 21.9%, water by 14.9% and refuse by 8%.

The proposed increases will be voted upon in May or June this year.

In the past, the ANC-led city has used its majority to push through increases despite protests from ratepayers.
