Anger over municipal rates increase

‘ratepayers unduly burdened’

eThekwini municipal increases, the highest in South Africa, came into effect on Saturday for the 2023/2024 financial year.

The increases mean residents will pay 18.49% more for electricity. Water will increase by 14.9% for residential customers, and 15.9% for business.

The property rates tariff increase was adjusted from 8.9% to 7.9%. Sanitation was reduced from 11.9% to 10.9% for domestic, and from 12.9% to 11.9% for business, while the refuse tariff increase was lowered from 8% to 6.9%.

Tim Tyrrell, the project manager at the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa), said eThekwini’s rates and tariff increases were excessive and and concerning.
