Uproar over proposed municipal tariff hikes

THE proposed “exhorbitant” tariff increases by the eThekwini and Msunduzi municipalities have been met with resistance, as residents and business owners struggle with the rising cost of living, and the ongoing water and electricity outages.

The eThekwini Municipality’s 2024/25 draft budget of R67.3 billion, which was tabled at a full council meeting by the city’s mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda, last week, saw various proposed tariff increases for electricity, water, and refuse services, among others.

The public consultation process on the draft budget is expected to commence soon.

Ish Prahladh, president of the eThekwini Ratepayers and Residents Association (ERRA), said the association had launched an online petition against the tariff increases being implemented.
