CASE STUDY: MARK DAVID HATWOOD owner of The Harbour Gallery, Portscatho

Q: When did you open your gallery and how have you seen it develop over the years?

A: The gallery was created in 2009 but I bought it in 2012. I decided from the outset to trust my instincts and work with artists I loved, rather than try and second-guess what a customer may like. That enabled me not only to learn to trust my instincts when choosing artists, but also made it easier for me to be genuinely enthusiastic about my artist's work, both online andthe outset, when a lot of galleries struggled during Covid, we had a £100k boost in sales during that financial year and the online side didn't wane once we reopened again to physical sales in the gallery.
