Light, tone, colour and composition are the essential ingredients that hold a painting together. It is therefore imperative to understand the differences between these three elements and how they combine to create a successful painting.

Light influences everything, illuminating the everyday scene. Different qualities of light create excitement, mood, atmosphere and emotion, all very difficult elements to convey. When painting en plein air the fleeting light that you may enjoy painting often disappears, therefore you must learn to accept this and adapt, especially when painting in this country.

The quality of the light will assist you to create the mood and atmosphere and recession in your work. The direction of light in your paintings is also an important factor for you to consider as the direction of side lighting, low lighting, or back lighting can be used creatively to ensure good design and composition.
