Although there are an increasing array of industrial locomotives available off the shelf, and many more in kit form, some prototypes still aren’t available. Many of us would like to model these, or just build something a bit different. Constructing a chassis is a step too far for many modellers, but a good ‘halfway house’ is to build a body to fit an existing RTR chassis. These are becoming more common with modern production methods such as 3D printing. This kit from Railway Mania represents a typical example of such an offering.
Some compromises need to be accepted if you are to go down this route as one chassis is never going to exactly match another, especially if they were made by different manufacturers. Often the differences are small and won’t be noticed anyway. After all, how many of us know how many spokes should be on a driving wheel? Sometimes a few small changes can go a long way towards rectifying shortfalls.
