Breeding Season Problems 4: the egg

ONCE we have overcome the problems of infertility and chilled eggs, etc, as discussed in my previous article (see March 8 issue), we approach the time when eggs should be hatching. In my experience, budgerigar eggs can hatch after anything from 16 to 24 days of incubation. We know that the normal time of incubation is 18 days, yet I have had the first egg hatch on its 18th day and a few hours later the second egg has hatched at 16 days of incubation. This hobby is full of surprises!

There is always the explanation for eggs hatching later due to the hen not incubating from the start. However, when an egg laid later in the sequence of laying hatches at 24 days, it requires some thought. Maybe the egg has
