THEN a boxer fights through the pain of a fractured jaw to emerge victorious, as Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez did in his unanimous 12-round decision over Cristian Gonzalez, he deserves a pass from any criticism in evaluating his performance. As a result, the 23-year-old southpaw from San Antonio will get none here.

If we are to believe Rodriguez – and there is no reason to doubt him – his horrific injury occurred in the sixth round. Rodriguez had been in total control to that point before then seeming to coast in a match where the judges favoured him by scores of 118-110, 117-111 and 116-112.

With the victory, Rodriguez claimed the vacant WBO flyweight title.
