They are almost silent, they emit no smells, and they are packed with smart tech. Electric cars are surely if slowly gaining popularity among both consumers and our political decision-makers. Australia is notably lagging behind in the global transition, with our slower uptake of EVs variously blamed on our long distances, the current lack of smaller affordable EVs here, and even our love of utes that can tow stuff (electric cars do not make good towers).
But a key element is a lack of guidance from above so far. We do not yet have a National Electric Vehicle Policy: submissions officially closed last October and those watching the industry expect it to emerge any day. While it may bring some national incentives (so far we have only State-based incentives, or disincentives in the case of Victoria’s ‘EV tax’), there is no expectation we will get the kind
