Softening the edges

Hardy geraniums are quite deservedly considered the most popular perennial in our gardens, and are among the easiest to grow. Also known as cranesbill, these reliable and low-maintenance performers will grow in most conditions, both sun or shade, and in the ground or in containers. Producing a smothering of flowers from spring to autumn, they are also wonderful for wildlife.

Not to be confused with tender pelargoniums – often also referred to as geraniums – cranesbill are fully hardy, withstanding whatever our winters may throw at them, and reliably popping back up in spring. They get their name from their long slender fruit, which resembles a crane’s bill.
