The colour of shadows

My awakening to the colour of shadows was painting an old, white wooden home set in a green field where cows grazed. I was amazed to see that the shadow under the eaves was tinted a diaphanous green. Before that I had thought all shadows were grey, as in photographs. I remember this incident because the cows formed a circle around me as I made my discovery: namely that the colour of shadows is a result of colours
