Released as this issue goes to press, Capcom’s latest remake, following on from the hugely popular (2019) and (2020), looks set to remind fans of ’s great is promising to update the game to the modern day while retaining the core principles that made the original such a hit back in 2005. The fourth game in the series perhaps represents the greatest challenge to the Capcom team – the original game has considerably more in common with gaming today and is viewed as perfect in the eyes of many fans, most of us at included. Nevertheless, 2023 appears to eliminate some of the issues that divided gamers 18 years ago. QuickTime Events (QTEs) will be massively scaled back, if not totally absent, and the escort sections involving the president’s daughter, Ashley Graham, will be smoothed out, ensuring they are less troublesome to players. Another sticking point to many is Leon’s lack of movement, and while this is a crucial factor in ramping up the game’s tension, the remake will add a parry mechanic for when the situation gets a little too close for comfort. With the promise of a deeper plot and characterisation, sidequests and the option to tackle some areas using stealth, ’s remake looks set to reinvigorate the survival horror hit that changed gaming forever.
