7-8: ASSO TWO-DAY OPEN, HYTHE, PRINCESS PARADE, 103 anglers
Strong southerly gales on both days and at times driving rain, really tested the mettle of the anglers. Reports leading up to the match were good, with several rays landed on the Friday by some of the Dutch anglers who had travelled over to fish the match. Despite the rough conditions, surprisingly small whiting made a nuisance of themselves, taking baits meant for dogfish and thornbacks. Fish bait certainly proved its worth, with many anglers not touching their worms. A convincing win for top overall angler, Lancing’s Darren Bond, winning his zone both days, hot on his toes was another south coast angler; Phil Lee, with Alan Price from Wales completing the top three.
■ 1st Darren Bond, Lancing (20); 2nd Phil Lee, Sussex (19); 3rd Alan
