Result: 1st Terry Wallworth, Colwyn Bay, A zone, 7.00m (not registered); 2nd Gary Wood Holyhead, A zone, 6.16m (2); 3rd Carl Edwards, Bootle, C zone, 5.97m (2). Longest fish: 61cm thornback ray caught by Jim Morris, Cheshire. Zone winner: Bill Lindfield, Greasby, 5.72m, B Zone.

PENN PLUS

7-8: ASSO TWO-DAY OPEN, HYTHE, PRINCESS PARADE, 103 anglers

Strong southerly gales on both days and at times driving rain, really tested the mettle of the anglers. Reports leading up to the match were good, with several rays landed on the Friday by some of the Dutch anglers who had travelled over to fish the match. Despite the rough conditions, surprisingly small whiting made a nuisance of themselves, taking baits meant for dogfish and thornbacks. Fish bait certainly proved its worth, with many anglers not touching their worms. A convincing win for top overall angler, Lancing’s Darren Bond, winning his zone both days, hot on his toes was another south coast angler; Phil Lee, with Alan Price from Wales completing the top three.
